After 2020’s census, the 2021 redistricting process is happening. However, this year’s political mapmaking round is the first in almost 50 years without federal pre-clearance in Texas. This will give way to greater gerrymandering –especially in a state with a long history of discrimination– that threatens the political power of minority communities despite their growing populations.
The main goal for this data visualization project was to increase donations for the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP) in Texas, a key organization in the fight for Latino voting rights, by raising awareness of the threat gerrymandering represents for this community. Given that 2021 was a redistricting year, this was an urgent issue, and the elimination of the federal pre-clearance step made it particularly relevant and dangerous.
